About Osteopathy

Osteopathy is a client-centred, drugless, non-invasive procedure of assessment and treatment that focuses on re-establishing and maintaining the natural relationship of bones, muscles, membranes, tissues and fluids within the body to help correct a wide variety of conditions.

The founder of Osteopathy, Dr. Andrew Taylor Still (b. 1828), was one of the first physicians to promote the idea of preventive medicine and the philosophy that physicians should focus on treating the disease rather than just the symptoms.

Osteopathic Manual Practitioners use their hands to provide a gentle and specific application of highly developed touch, Osteopathic palpation, that treats the body as a whole in order to restore function to the musculoskeletal, respiratory, cardiovascular, digestive, reproductive and nervous systems.

The basic principles of Osteopathy maintain that all body parts are interconnected, that proper functioning in one part of the body is dependent on the normal functioning in other parts of the body and that with proper guidance the body has the natural ability to heal itself.

It is a science degree in Osteopathy BSc, and in Canada, Osteopathic Manual Practitioners complete a rigorous 5-year program of clinical and academic study in osteopathic manipulation followed by a research thesis. They treat patients using manual techniques only. They do not use drugs, medication, surgery or other medical procedures.

Osteopathy is an extremely gentle form of treatment and is suitable for everyone including infants.
